When I first joined a gym, my one goal was to be fitter, bigger and stronger. What I came to understand later, was that my real motivation was to not be alone. In pursuit of this goal I came to realise my attempts at ‘belonging’ were dependent on my feelings, how I looked and how I performed. But my feelings would always be transient and never permanent, there was no end to ‘looking better’ and the peak of my performance was a mountain without a top. This eventually brought me to discover a liberating truth; I am not what I feel, I am not my body and I am not what I do. Exercise culture can often seem to reinforce a sense of inadequacy, but we are not the problem.
Now, and after working as a Health & Fitness Coach for over 5 years, my work is infused by my personal and professional experience and I can confidently write that there are familiar patterns within each of us and every client that works with me.
We all share a desire for self-improvement and acceptance.
